Social media is taking the internet by storm.

And Twitter is leading the way with a staggering 750% growth over the past 12 months.  But with tweets rapidly approaching thousands per second, how do you make sure your tweets are getting attention?

There aren’t any specific rules; however, below are our five tips/guidelines to help you stay ahead of the curve.  By far the most important tip is number one, really give this one some thought before you start twittering.

1. Be Clear -  Start by asking yourself, “Why am I on Twitter”?  Are you twittering for personal use only?  Or are you twittering for work?  Are you an employee or self-employed business owner?  You get the idea.  Having a clear understanding of why you are on Twitter will help you be consistent and concise with your tweets.

2. Provide Relevant Information -  No that you are clear about why you are on Twitter, you should develop a plan to provide relevant information to your followers.  Stick to what you know best.  Your followers want to know that you know your stuff, they are following you because you are the expert in your niche.

3. Good Links – Please, if you are going to post a link -test it!  Don’t lose your followers because you were lazy and didn’t check to make sure your links work.  Test your links!!

4. Be Complimentary – My wife shared this tip with me :)   I admit I hadn’t really grasped the power of Twitter until she explained this properly.  Think about it – most people are very happy to see their name spreading positively across the internet, so help them out.  Retweet those tweets that you find interesting or valuable.  Click on people’s blog/site links and read their posts, if you like what you read post a comment on your blog and do a trackback.  They will love it and it will help your search engine traffic.  A real Win-Win.

5. Ask Questions -  Engage your followers by asking good questions.  This goes for your blog also, try to end with a question.  This is a great way for you to speculate and/or offer your opinion on ideas and invite others to do the same.  Give people a reason to talk about you.
